Why Commission a Work of Art?

While some are satisfied with adorning their surroundings in cheap reproductions or mass-produced art, a discerning, sensitive soul knows that there is no real substitute for an original work of art. Many years ago I lent a large collection of vibrant originals for display in an award-winning designer restaurant for several months before it was time for the work to move on to other exhibition venues. I started removing pieces in stages, while the owner replaced them with quality reproduction prints. During this process he called me late one evening, clearly distressed and told me something was missing: like a beloved living soul had left the building...Sufficed to say, I felt his pain, we worked out a deal, and he ended up investing in the entire collection, thereafter becoming one of my greatest collectors.

As a visual artist I find words fail to fully describe the essence of what distinguishes original art from mass-reproductions. There seems to be an emotive language; a visual poetry written throughout every brushstroke and gesture, woven between the layers of colour and shape and embedded in the depths of texture and tone...There's something in the way the artist struggles to capture and express the very essence of creation, reaching out, listening intently for divine inspiration - seems to imbue each work of art with a living energy and spirit. I can't truly explain it. All I know is that every time I sit or stand at the easel, I am utterly in love with the creative process, and my creative intention is thus filled with love and a sense of deep healing. All I know is where mass-produced art may become just part of the furniture and interior decor, original art works tend to draw an audience, creating a talking point in any environment. Just as the artist engages in a dialogue with the piece throughout the creative process, the dialogue seems to continue throughout the life of the work.

The Commissioning Process

Contact the artist for a free initial consultation to clarify your vision and gather or create any necessary resource images. All your ideas and inspirations are welcome at this stage, and throughout the process.

A quotation and mutual agreement will then be written up and payments are typically spread over 3-4 installments beginning with an initial deposit to cover the artist’s time and costs for stage one. Everything is fully negotiable, and the artist keeps careful record of time and cost throughout. The final cost may be less than quoted, but will not exceed the agreement, unless additional changes or costs involved are subsequently discussed and agreed upon. Initial design work will commence upon receipt of your initial deposit, and you will be provided with a number of compositional and design ideas to choose from. Once you’ve approved the design, work on the final piece commences and a second installment becomes due for materials and time. The artist will often create two or more pieces according to your specifications so that you have a choice of preference for your final purchase piece. The final installment is then due upon final approval and arrangement for delivery of the work. The finished work of art will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity, and you may also have the option to purchase the artists design work, notes, sketches, and/or additional finished pieces if you wish.
